Why we are starting Art Club.
In a world of technology having a place for children where they can explore physical materials is so important, our goal is to have a space where they are comfortable to experiment and interact with those freely.
We understand that it can be a struggle to set up arts and crafts at home where children can fully let go and express themselves without the worry of creating an uncontrollable mess! Our aim is to give them access to a space where both parents and children don’t have to worry about that mess, the children can explore and create without holding back. All while building skills both individually and in groups.
We want to show children that it is good to create, it helps them process the world around them and gives them the opportunity to do that in their own way without the worry of being graded afterwards, creating is about the process just as much as the final outcome! And we care about giving children access to those good experiences. Our aim to build children’s creative confidence that will help them have another tool to express and explore themselves, while also helping develop vital skills throughout their developmental stages like dexterity, all while giving them a sense of self and belonging.
We will create a fun, encouraging, positive and safe environment where we can foster the children’s imagination without judgment but will be responsibly guided!
We will have session plans with tutor led projects, group activities and free play. So if the children have idea of their own they can explore those without the understandable limitations they would have in school or at home.
About Milly
My name is Amelia but I mostly go by Milly, I’m a 25 year old artists from Bedfordshire and have been working with children for many years. Art has always been a way for me to process the world around me and allows me to make sense of it all. As a child Barton Players annual Summer School really allowed me to get stuck into the arts and everything they have to offer, especially the Art Room! 20 years on I now run the art room each year and the joy it brings the children is so special, It’s something I look forward every summer.
I did however have my confidence knocked as a creative when in school, I could feel the creative, expressive spirit I had being knocked from me with each project we did. I lost my love for it, it took me a long time to find my way back and I did that by going back to school as a mature student and starting my Fine Art degree. All my life experiences so far have shown me how important freedom of expression is, as well as the importance of Education! And my goal with AJ art club is to find a happy middle ground for the children so they don’t lose their love for the very important tool that is art! Or maybe even develop a new love for art that they didn’t know they had!
My goal is to create a place where they can explore new sensory experiences that arts and crafts offer without parents having to worry about the mess! And with the amount of mess I made as a child I think it’s my turn to clean some up!
